The use of high- and medium-altitude UAVs has delivered a step-change in the way armed forces are able to gather intelligence and provide over watch for military operations. However, the recent cancellation of Germany's Euro Hawk programme is illustrative of the expense and complexity of deploying these advanced systems, particularly during current economic conditions which dictate that all equipment must be delivering value for money throughout its entire life cycle.
