As more and more data is acquired by unmanned assets on the battlefield, the challenge now is sorting through it and delivering it to those who really need it, Claire Apthorp discovers. Unmanned technology is becoming central to the way armed forces gather information in the battlespace. With the availability of UAVs, warfighters have better situational awareness than ever before, including access to information on the location of friendly and enemy forces. As the conventional open battlefield increasingly gives way to dense, urban environments, the use of unmanned assets through which this information is gathered has proved invaluable in increasing the survivability and lethality of the dismounted soldier.
