In terms of underlying messages, Col Greg Gonzalez, US Army project manager for unmanned aircraft systems (PM UAS) is quick to observe: 'Most people don't realise that the army has such a large quantity and fleet of unmanned aircraft systems. Right now we have about 1,000 aircraft in-theatre, divided between Iraq and Afghanistan. Those are aircraft, not systems. That's just what's in-theatre. And out of those, over the last several years, we have flown about 925,000 flight hours of UAS. And almost 90% of those hours - about 812,000 - were flown in direct combat operations. That's really a huge accomplishment.' The accomplishment is so huge, in fact, that the PM UAS sees historic parallels.
