Industry must wrestle with widely varying fuel grades and evolve a mature systems engineering approach if it is to realise the potential of heavy fuel engines for Small UAVs. Decades of R&D into UAV heavy fuel engines (HFE) of about 1-20hp have so far yielded few operational systems, and some industry experts have described those that have been deployed as merely research projects. One such source commented that for many years the industry has been one of smoke and mirrors, 'with many people claiming to be able to run on heavy fuel, only to have some caveat in order to do so,' he said. 'Many engines have quite a few flight hours now but are constrained in some way, for example not being able to cold start without external aids or start fuels.'
