To date, UAVs have been used in Central and Latin America as discreet surveillance platforms, mainly in support of counter-drug and similar activities. Against that background, Jose Higuera looks at how Colombia is leading the way in the acquisition of weaponised systems in the region. Mexican UAV operations received some bad publicity in December 2010, when an Aeronautics Orbiter airframe malfunctioned and crashed in El Paso, Texas. Subsequently, the aircraft was salvaged by US Customs and Border Protection officers alerted by a local resident. No one was hurt and no property damaged, as the Orbiter's emergency parachute was successfully deployed after the machine stalled.
