摘要

This book is a collection of reports of the 95th Dahlem Workshop on The Dynamics of Fault Zones (Berlin, January 2005), but it is not (as the products of some other workshops) a mere collection of extended abstracts. The idea behind the Dahlem Konferenzen is to promote interdisciplinary research on complex systems and, in the words of the Scientific Director, Prof. Dr. Werner Reutter, its aim is "not necessarily to reach a consensus, but to identify gaps in knowledge, to find new ways to approach contentious points, and to indicate the direction of future research." Invited participants (41 in this case) form four interdisciplinary working groups each of which addresses a chosen aspect of the overall workshop theme, according to goals chosen by a program advisory committee and on the starting basis of specially prepared background papers written before the meeting. The groups prepare reports that summarize the results of their discussions and these reports together with the background papers constitute, after being revised by the participants and by other specialists, the chapters of the present book.
