THE Pharmaceutical Benefits Advisory Commission (PBAC) recently redefined cholesterol target levels for patients on statin or fib-rate therapy, taking into consideration the absolute risk of cardiovascular disease in patients including those with existing risk factors.Patients with symptomatic coronary, cerebrovascular or peripheral vascular disease, diabetic patients with microal-binuria, diabetes in Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander people, others with diabetes older than 60 years, or those patients with a strong family history of coronary heart disease, may commence cholesterol lowering therapies at any cholesterol level.According to Professor Iioyd Sansom, chair of the PBAC, these patients have a high risk of future cardiovascular events and any reduction is likely to be clinically important.
