摘要

THE frequency of aberrant behaviours and psychiatric symptoms associated with dementia and Alzheimer's disease occurs in as many as 50 per cent of dementia patients with 24 per cent being verbally aggressive and 14 per cent being physically aggressive. Behaviour problems reported in demented nursing home patients approaches 90 per cent, with agitated and aggressive behaviours peaking in patients who are suffering with moderate to severe dementia. In Australia, there are 117,200-136,800 patients with moderate to severe dementia over 65 years. Behavioural changes are frequentiy the most distressing aspect of dementia for family members to deal with. It has also been reported that coping with and trying to ameliorate aggressive and agitated behaviour is the highest priority for nursing staff and carers of severely demented patients.
