摘要

"The mark of high competence in science is to do onething excellently. The mark of genius is to do two differentthings excellently. Steven F. Maier began his career as anexperimental psychologist and with Bruce Overmier andMartin Seligman pioneered the field of learned helpless-ness. The success of the model they developed was part ofthe attack that altered the overall paradigm of psychologyaway from behaviorism toward cognitive psychology. Inmidcareer, Maier decided to bring the brain into his work.He discovered that when one is sick or injured, cytokinesare released by immune cells and then beget brain cyto-kines, which produce depressed mood and interfere withcognition. Maier then revisited learned helplessness using astaggering array of the tools of modem neuroscience. Inwhat may be the most elegant series of reductionist experi-ments ever done in psychology, he worked out the brainstructures that produce and that counteract learned helpless-ness. By the criterion of two different scientific break-throughs, Maier qualifies as one of psychology' s very fewgeniuses."
