The "mad-cow" crisis in the UK in April 1996 has had its positive effects on the oilmeal sector including copra meal. Following the ban on animal-based feedmeals from UK, the feed compounders used other sources such as oilmeals, grains and other substitutes. It led to a surge in demand and added to the bullishness in an already strong market for oilmeals, Price of soybean meal increased to US 273 dollar in April 1996 as against, US 264 dollar/MT in December 1995 and US 192 dollar/ MT in June 1995. As a leader in the oilmeals sector, this has helped to lift the price of other oil meals. Most oilmeals in European markets enjoyed US 10 - 20 dollar/MT increase in the last few months, since the "mad-cow" crisis.
