Palladium prices averaged $733.85 during 2011, 38.7% higher than in 2010. Even as prices were much higher than a year earlier, palladium prices were declining for much of the year, with the quarterly average price of palladium declining in three of the four quarters (second quarter through fourth quarter). The decline in price was largely back loaded, with the sharpest decline occurring during the fourth quarter of the year. A decline in investor demand in palladium drove prices lower during this period. The average price of palladium during the first half of the year was $776.55, with the average declining to $692.96 in the second half. This decline during the second half was despite the sharp increase in palladium prices during July. A tightening market balance during 2012 is expected to garner investor interest in the metal, which should help to boost prices for the metal.
