The platinum market is much smaller than the gold and silver markets, relating to the physical ounces traded, derivative or paper transactions, and the dollar value of the metal exchanged. The two major exchanges where platinum is traded are the New York Mercantile Exchange (Nymex), which is part of CME Group, and the Tokyo Commodities Exchange (Tocom). Platinum also is traded at exchanges in Shanghai, Mumbai, Moscow, and South Africa, but these are much smaller markets. Over the counter markets and exchanges provide liquidity to the platinum market, making it easier for buyers and sellers to be matched. Measuring trading volumes and open interest at exchanges helps illustrate the level of activity in the market and trends.
