The Dalmellington Iron Company - its engines and men by David L Smith (in my opinion quite the best book on industrial railways so far published) mentions two locomotives as having been built in the town of Ayr, one of which was delivered to the Dalmellington Iron Co. He was unaware of the date, but the Ayrshire Advertiser for 11th May 1871 gives us the answer: LOCOMOTIVE ENGINE. Messrs J & A Taylor, Townhead Works, Ayr, have just finished a tank locomotive engine - the first they have constructed - for the Dalmellington Iron Co. It is a well-constructed and elegant engine, and reflects great credit on its makers.
