A new Standard is being developed in response to safety concerns over the increasing number and size of photovoltaic (PV) arrays (often called solar cells) being installed on houses and buildings. As PV arrays are electrical items, the requirements of AS/NZS 3000 Wiring Rules apply to these installations however, due the characteristics of PV arrays, additional requirements need to be applied. Particular concerns are: PV arrays are d.c. devices and have characteristics which are different to normal (a.c.) wiring. PV arrays can't be 'turned off' whilst the sun is shining and, unless covered by a blanket or similar opaque cover (which may not be always possible), are live and therefore special requirements are needed for installations. (It was not considered feasible to require all work on PV arrays to be carried out at night.)
