摘要

A particularly dry Australian winter, coupled with a depletion of water storage dams that is exacerbating the ongoing drought, and the predicted hot summer months ahead will further heighten interest in the protection of property from bushfire attack. Australian Standard AS 3959 has been under major revision since publication of the second edition in 1999. Considerable work has occurred as a result of recent bushfire research including studies of the bushfire in the ACT during January 2003. In the second public comment draft for AS 3959 to be issued shortly, issues being addressed include the introduction of the highest category of bushfire attack, 'flame zone', currently outside the scope of the 1999 edition. Bushfire assessment, Section 2, is undergoing considerable re-working and specific areas being addressed include radiant heat flux calculations, slope measurement and shielding attack from existing buildings.
