In what was a true celebration of Australia's next design leaders, the 2005 Australian Design Awards, A Desigti Generation, was officially launched on 9 September 2004, alongside the much-anticipated 2004 Australian Design Awards Yearbook, More than 150 industry guests flocked to Australia's new design centre, Object Gallery, at St Margarets in Sydney to catch a glimpse of all things cutting edge. On exhibition at the Gallery was the work of new British design talent, Sam Buxton, with his MIKRO series, an exquisite, miniaturised world of stainless steel houses and structures which use electroluminescence to guide the way. Providing the perfect backdrop for a special presentation of Australia's rising design talent, Buxton's works shared the stage with a range of colourful, eye catching string sculptures entitled Slip by Western Australian textile artist, Pearl Rasmussen. The theme carried right through to the design and production of the Yearbook, a publication that has taken the Australian Design Awards to a new level of sophistication, and was the result of hours of tireless dedication by a young design team at Sydney agency, Gentil Eckersley. Creative Director of Gentil Eckersley, Franck Gentil, entertained the audience with a rare insight into the creation of the Yearbook and working with the Australian Design Awards on this significant publication. Other speakers included Brandon Gien, Director of the Australian Design Awards, and John Tucker, Chief Executive Officer of Standards Australia.
