A Manual defining the characteristics which road safety barriers need in order to achieve the wide range of the desired safety outcomes has been developed by Mr Dan Fardon, Professor Rod Troutbeck and Associate Professor Raphael Grzebieta. Particular attention is given to the safety of 'unprotected' road users, and to important secondary safety consequences which road safety barriers can have. The authors' own inspection of road safety barriers and roadsides in Australia, New Zealand, the UK, and the United States revealed that many new road safety barrier installations in these countries are potentially lethal, and that even installations which are initially safe, often become lethal very quickly. The Manual describes strategies for managing and undertaking activities associated with road safety barriers, which have proven effective in ensuring that the installations are safe and remain safe, instead of forming potentially lethal safety hazards.
