Rory Mortimore is Emeritus Professor of Engineering Geology at the University of Brighton, Visiting Professor of Engineering Geology at the University of Leeds and Director of ChalkRock Ltd., a company specializing in research, development and applied geology of the Chalk in Europe. Before Rory became a geologist, he served in the Royal Green Jackets and then with the Brigade of Gurkhas in Malaysia and Hong Kong during the late 1960s. After leaving the army he took the opportunity to pursue his long-held dream to study geology, inspired by a school teacher who had been a mining geologist in Australia. After graduating from the University of Hull in 1973 he worked as a contract geologist with the British Antarctic Survey on South Georgia from 1973 to 1974. On returning to the UK he was offered a PhD post at Brighton Polytechnic (now the University of Brighton). His PhD was on the Chalk in relation to proposed civil engineering projects, including the A27 Brighton bypass. During this time he worked with Drs Denis Henry and Philip Drummond.
