In the second part of this feature Terry Mabbett looks in detail at how bacterial bleeding canker is affecting a typical group of horse chestnuts in north London. Within five years of first widespread appearance (2000) Forest Research estimated 50,000trees out of a UK population of around 1 to 2 million horse chestnuts were already infected with bacterial bleeding canker. The latest survey of 2600 trees nationwide conducted by the Forestry Commission and announced-in April 2008 showed almost half (49%) of trees surveyed carried symptoms. The worst affected area was south east England where over 70% of trees had symptoms. So just how serious is bacterial bleeding canker. the green leaves of 2008 have unfolded revealing bare branches and damage doneduring the record wet late spring and summer of 2007. Serious and worsening by the day is not an alarmist description of bacterial bleeding canker's damage to horse chestnut.
