As the mantle of Britain's tallest tree changes hands - or branches - once more, how are such giants measured in the first place? In February this year, the media was buzzing with the news that the Stronardron Douglas fir had become the tallest tree in Britain. Standing as high as 6379m, it took the title from the previous holder, another Douglas fir, Dughall Mor, near Inverness, which came in at 62.02m (see page 44). Second place went to the Diana's Grove Grand Fir at Blair Castle, Fife, which stands at 62.7m, while just outside the medal positions in fourth place was ranked the Hermitage Douglas fir at Dunkeld, Perthshire, at 61.3m.
