Terry Mabbett explores the biology behind the traditions and folklore associated with these traditional winter icons. Have you ever wondered why holly (Ilex aquifolium) and ivy (Hedera helix) featured so prominently in pagan yuletide and then persisted through the ages into contemporary Christmas and New Year celebrations? The basic reason is that holly and ivy were the only ubiquitous and common evergreen plants on the British landscape offering hope and warmth in an otherwise cold and dark winter environment.
