摘要

An overview of May's important Tree Diseases Conference, hosted by the RFS and the RASE. UK trees, woodlands and forests, we all know, can succumb to the threats of pests and diseases. A glance at the press would tend to suggest that these threats areon the increase, but is there any evidence for this? And if so, is this increase chiefly due to human activity? Dr Joan Webber, principal pathologist for Forest Research, believes the first scenario is certainly true. At a conference hosted in May by the Royal Forestry Society and the Royal Agricultural Society of England, she warned that the introductions of new pests and diseases appeared to be 'increasing in tempo', and the range of envirorunents makes early detection and eradication of any introduced organisms much more difficult.
