In the first of our series of articles drawn from the recent Tree Diseases conference, Roddie Burgess highlights the importance of good biosecurity practice. Looking back at my 20 plus years of dealing with Plant Health, I have worked out that if we split that period in two, things have changed significantly in the last decade, and continue to change, in a rather increasingly alarming way. When I took up the challenge of the Forestry Commission's Plant Health Service in 1987, Dendroctonus micans (the great spruce bark beetle) was high on the agenda, and we were beginning to see the positive impact that the release of the specific predator, Rhizophagus grandis, was beginning to have - thanks largely to the efforts of Forest Research.
