Incoming RFS President, John Fryer-Spedding, reminds us of the philosophy behind the Society's motto and discusses the way forward for the Society. Until recently, members of the Royal Forestry Society were reminded four times a year, upon receivingtheir Journal, of the motto of the Society, which was inscribed on the front cover: Serif arbores quae alteri seculo prosint. Now, for good reasons, this exhortation has been removed from such prize position. But it has, nevertheless, value in laying down for us a cardinal principle: 'he plants trees to be of service to another age'.
