摘要

Mary Parker describes the challenge and techniques used in controlling the spread of Dutch Elm Disease and maintaining the surviving mature elm trees in East Sussex. Elm trees are vigorous and fast-growing, thriving on chalk soils and capable of withstanding pollution and salt winds. Therefore they can grow where few other trees can survive which makes them invaluable as a means of enhancing the landscape of streets and parks in coastal towns. There is only one real threat to elms and that is DutchElm Disease (DED) to which they have little resistance and in recent decades it has devastated them throughout the north temperate regions of the world.
