With reference to recent correspondence, in the early days of the now extinct New Zealand Forest Service when decisions as to which species to plant were made, various eucalypts were trialled; those chosen were a total disaster. It was decided to concentrate on Pinus radiata to such an extent that at a subsequent conference, an overseas delegate asked on the second day if he could be informed as to which species was being discussed! Some 50 years later a few enthusiasts showed that certain eucalyptswould grow well in New Zealand. Thanks to the Alternative Species Section of the Forest Research Institute, and the need of the two large pulp companies for alternative fibre, eucalypts became fashionable.
