Susannah Podmore brings us up to date of the latest developments in the Forest Education Initiative and suggests way in which you can get involved. Ask most young children what they know about trees and they may be able to tell you that they are goodto climb and money doesn't grow on them. But if required to produce a list of everyday items derived from trees then the result is likely to be a stare as blank as............ah, yes,the sheet of paper in front of them. It is for this reason that the Forest Education Initiative (FEI) was conceived in 1992 with the mission to 'increase young people's understanding of the local and global importance of trees, woodlands, forest environments and the wood processing industries'.
