One of the favourite past times of a forester is to criticize the forest inventory, or sometimes, to make excuses for it. In Ontario, we rely | very heavily on our Forest Resource Inventory (FRI). FRI is an integral part of our strategic forest planning, and plays a significant role in determining allowable harvest area and setting of forest level objectives. We currently rely on the FRI to do our operational planning. When we get to the business of connecting our inventory map to one of the yield models we have developed, and selecting some proposed timber harvest locations, people get upset when we send the machinery to the harvest block, and the trees that are standing there are not what we thought they were, or at least, not what the inventorypredicted they were. What happened? Where did the inventory go wrong?
