It's not often that you hear just three or four words that bring everything screeching to a halt, but it happened to me about a week ago. I had just gotten home from work, and I was hanging up my jacket when my oldest son, Alex, noticed the latest issue of Popular Science in a stack of mail. He asked, "Can I read this?" This was a good development-I had been hoping to find some periodical geared toward an 11-year-old that would fire his interest in science or technology, but it never occurred to me that he could tackle a magazine geared toward an adult audience. After I picked up my jaw and my jacket off of the floor, I very casually answered "Yes." It turned out that he had noticed on the cover an image of a tiny robot that looks like an insect. It is still a concept, but when developed, it is intended to crawl into hard-to-reach areas such as piping systems carrying a tiny camera for visual inspections.
