Last year was full of extremes in all sorts of measures-the Dow Jones Industrial Average hit a trough of less than 12,000 and a peak higher than 14,000; housing starts peaked at an annual rate of 1,491,000 in March and dropped more than 20 percent, to 1,182,000 units, by September; crude oil was trading at less than 50 dollars per barrel in January, and it was higher than 90 dollars per barrel by the end of the year; manufacturing activity, as measured by the Institute for Supply Management's PMI reading, was a healthy 56.0 in June and slumped to 47.7 in December; quarter-to-quarter growth in U.S. gross domestic product was a lethargic 0.6 percent in the first quarter and 4.9 percent in the third quarter of 2007.
