The recent rise of the AS/USS exchange rate to recent 88+ US centlevels has pushed the currency to levels not seen since early 1989or, in effect, to new 18 year highs and very much to the top end of itsrecent two decade, post float range experience, (shown below).Reasons for such an impressive multiyear performance are not hard to find. Booming once-in-a-generation levelsof commodity prices combined withsynchronised global growth has driventhe sustained peak demand volumesfor our exports, allied as it is mostnoticeably in the rise of the Chineseeconomy. This, taken with the AS 's highrelative interest rates, have attractedunprecedented levels of investmentinto our local currency.
