Sand dunes, sunshine, and the Dutch North Atlantic coast were the setting for an interesting and animated international conference on oxidative and osmotic stress. From t he beginning of this meeting it was clear that the organizers ambitions reached beyond that of many conferences. Not only was the intention to present and discuss novel results, but, in addition, scientists working on animal cells, bacteria, plants and yeast were invited to talk about their work in a broadly understandable way, enabling individuals to exchange ideas and share scientific approaches on these topics. The intention to cover cellular phenomena from signal perception to the induction of target genes also reflected the high ambition for this conference.
