Cosmid vectors such as pOCA18 (Ref. 1) and pLZO3 (Ref. 2) have been developed that can transform plants. However, the low cloning capacity of these vectors limits their usefulness. Recently, two research groups have developed vectors for the transformation of large DNA fragments into plants. These vectors are designed to have the characteristics of both bacterial artificial chromosomes (BAVs) and binary vectors for Agrobacterium-mediated transformation.
