It was not just the legendary hemi engine that made its debut in the 1951 chrysler new yorker. The car had power steering, too. Born in Kansas in 1872 and the son of a locomotive engineer, Walter P. Chrysler was one of the more innovative engineers in the early US car industry. Chrysler forsook a college education to be a machinist's apprentice, working first in the railway industry before joining the infant General Motors in 1912 as manager of a Buick plant, becoming president of the company in 1916. Parting from GM in 1919, he moved to Maxwell Motor Corporation, working with three former Studebaker engineers to design what was described as a revolutionary new car, the Chrysler Six of 1924, which introduced the USA to four-wheel hydraulic brakes. The car also featured a comparatively light, powerful, high-compression straight-six with aluminum pistons (used earlier in military aircraft by W. 0. Bentley), replaceable oil and air filters, and pressure lubrication.
