With the powerful 1.8T engine and a sporting suspension set-up, at such a sensible price, the Polo GTI is a force to be reckoned with. THE NEW Polo GTI has been rather a long time coming. Way back in early 2002, when Volkswagen launched the previous new model in the UK, it was suggested that there would soon be a high-performance version. The combination of a 1.8T engine and 6-speed transmission was specifically mentioned at the time, and - soon after the unveiling of a rally-tuned version at the Essen Show in late 2001, it seemed entirely plausible. We'd previously seen a GTI version of the Mk 4 Polo, introduced in Spring 2000, powered by a 125 PS 16-valve 1.6-litre and with distinctly overt styling features, and so the concept was a familiar one.
