It is an honor and a privilege for me to continue my service as Editor-in-Chief of the 2009 Year Book of Anesthesiology and Pain Management. With this edition, I am happy to welcome another distinguished anesthesiologist to the editorial board. Cynthia A. Lien, MD, is Professor of Anesthesiology at Weill Cornell Medical College in New York. Dr. Lien is replacing H. T. Lee, MD, PhD, who has ably served as a member of the editorial board for the last 5 years. I am grateful to Dr. Lee for his service to the Year Book of Anesthesiology and Pain Management. I recently reviewed the selections for this edition and, as in past editions of the Year Book of Anesthesiology and Pain Management, the anesthesiology subspecialties (eg, cardiothoracic anesthesia, critical care medicine, neuroanesthesia, obstetric anesthesia, pain medicine, pediatric anesthesia, regional anesthesia) are well represented. For example, sepsis, septic and hemorrhagic shock, and acute lung injury are the subjects of a number of the critical care medicine selections. And several selections address issues related to requirements for-and risks of-allogeneic blood transfusion, both in and out of the operating room. This edition probably includes more selections related to geriatric medicine issues than any previous edition.
