摘要

The following article gives a brief introduction to the history, research and collecting of bamboos for the collection in the "Bamboo Garden" at Kew. Temperate bamboos were first introduced into Europe by the famous Victorian expedition plant hunters, who traveled to China, Japan and the Himalayas looking for unusual and interesting plants to collect and introduce into European gardens. Eminent botanists such as Humboldt, Spruce, and Hooker would all have traveled through bamboo forests collecting plants and seeds. When the bamboos they collected on these expeditions were brought back to Europe, they were introduced to gardens and nurseries in Italy, France, Ireland, Scotland and England. Because little was known about the hardiness and cultivationof these unusual plants, they were usually planted in the milder areas such as Cornwall, SW. Ireland and the West Coast of Scotland, where the climate is warmer due to the Gulf Stream.
