For those who work with bamboo as a craft material, AG Rao is recognized as the co-editor of Bamboo Craft Design, a book that was published in India in 1994. This collaborative effort was the result of a bamboo craft-design seminar, Jagruti, held at the Industrial Design Centre in Bombay (now Mumbai) the previous year. The topics ranged from discussions of bamboo's design properties, traditions and techniques to industrial design and the final marketing of new products. The goal of both the seminar and the publication was to encourage product development in India, a country where bamboo was already an accepted craft material. The chapter authors looked at the design traditions within India, but also looked outside India's borders, specifically to the bamboo craft tradition in Japan.
