In the spring of 1999, 15 students began a semester-long bamboo program within the Department of Industrial Design at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) in Providence, Rhode Island. The studio, "Material legacies: Bamboo", was part of the BambooDesign Initiative which originated at RISD in 1997 in collaboration with Linda Garland from The Environmental Bamboo Foundation of Bali. The primary objective of the initiative was to explore bamboo's design potential as an industrial material, rather than a craft material.
