The silly season went missing this year in the media response to the tsunami.But the bizarre was still present.New Scientist was typical in lecturing Indian Ocean nations on failing to spend US20 million on a tsunami warning system which might have saved a good deal of the estimated US7.5 billion damage.12 But that journal also carried the news that the carbon trading provisions of the Kyoto protocol are already being undermined by European governments who have given over-generous emissions allowances to major industries,thus counteracting any significant market forces in favour of reduced greenhouse gas generation.
