The frequent and untimely death of young people resulting from the use or abuse of'recreational' drugs triggered me to implore all chemists to become more involved in informing young people about the effects and risks of extensive recreational drug use. I am the first to acknowledge that the use of drugs for therapeutic or recreational purposes is present in virtually all human societies. However, as informed chemists, we have a moral, if not ethical, responsibility to get out there and talk and inform (not lecture) the kids of today about recreational drug-related harm, and the problems of drug dependency.
