I HAVE NEVER CONSIDERED MYSELF an annual sort of guy, erring instead on the side of strapping woody plants complemented by an ever-diminishing inventory of oh-so-yesterday perennials. Perhaps I am shy of associating myself with the lurid bedding-out schemes that result from the felonious use of snapdragons, petunias, and marigolds. Real men don't do floral clocks. But outside the bilious realm of paint-by-number contrivances, or beyond the rims of whitewall tires, many good gardeners do annuals verywell. And some annuals are better than others. Before I get down to confessing my favorites, first my list of what makes an acceptable annual.
