Vineyards, pastures and fallow fields line the road that winds through Oregon's Willamette Valley on the way to Dancing Oaks Nursery. The one-lane gravel driveway leading to the nursery crests the top of a hill offering panoramic views of Bald Mountain but no what lies at the end of the long descent. It is down in the green at this destination nursery lies in wait—a sumptuous reward for and visitors who make the trek. Everyone who visits wants to know why the proprietors, Leonard Foltz and Fred Weisensee, opted to open a nursery so far off the beaten path. The answer involves family history and happenstance. Both men were raised in the hills and dales of the Willamette Valley. Leonards family lived on the east side, snugged up against the foothills of the Cascade Mountains in Jordan. Fred lived on the family farm and Christmas tree plantation on the western edge of the valley—now the location of Dancing Oaks Nursery.
