The RHS has conducted Dahlia trials since 1863, when pompon dahlias were assessed at the society's Chis-wick garden. Over the years, fashions have waxed and waned. While dahlias have persisted, their popularity has changed. In 1913, the RHS Dahlia Committee assessed over 1,000 cultivars and species, but in the latest long-term trial, in 2004, there were just 152 entries. A quarter of these have already received the Award of Garden Merit (AGM) and act as standards in their classification. A quarter are on their way to getting an AGM and half are new cultivars. which will be assessed over several seasons. In recent years, there has been a trend away from the exhibition types, such as the large decoratives, towards bedding cultivars such, as Dahlia 'Moonfire', Dahlia 'Fascination' and Dahlia 'Preston Park'. The very short, compact cultivars, such as the Gallery series (raised by Cees Verwer and introduced by Proculture Plants), Dalina series. Dahlietta series (raised by Ball Floraplant and introducedby Ball Colegrave) and Dahlianova series have been assessed, and the best given the AGM. Some exciting new cultivars are being bred by people such as Ken Stock and it is worth looking at his website: www.kesdahlias.co.uk.
