Historic garden managers must raise their game on all fronts in understanding visitor attitudes to ensure that they are not put off by the recession. Andrew Mercer is watching the visitors. The project director is helping to oversee a 9m garden and house restoration but one of the biggest problems may not be capital funding. A more pressing concern for Mercer and others like him is a general drop in numbers of visitors to gardens and historic houses caused by the recession. Lowther Castle and Gardensopened its doors to the public for the first time in April and visitor numbers are crucial to its success. So far, so good, declares Mercer, with 1,300 people having already signed up as potential members of the friends group from the many more who havevisited this old property but new garden attraction (see box).
