Could polytunnels and other crop protection structures do for cherries what they have done over the past ten years for soft fruit? English Apples & Pears chief executive Adrian Barlow certainly thinks so. "The potential for cherries is considerable —there is the opportunity to increase the season and to replace imports," he says. "But production has always been very weather-dependent. Late frosts could hammer the crop, rain could cause splitting during ripening as the trees take up too much water and there is the threat of bird damage." Protected production offers a solution, he suggests. "But new dwarf root stocks have also been key as you need to control the height of trees if you're going to protect them. The covers are quite expensive becauseof the height. But they also provide protection from predatory insects, while keeping in beneficial ones, so reducing the need for pesticides."
