Robert Grimsey, national collection holder, Stowmarket, Suffolk "I like the smaller, golden foliage types, which are excellent for shade. Aesculus hippocastanum 'Wisselink' grows up to four metres, with pale yellow foliage that doesn't scorch badly inthe sun. Aesculus hippocastanum 'Hampton Court Gold' is slower growing with a short trunk. Both are ideal for semi-shade. "Most Aesculus are too big for ordinary gardens, but for a medium-sized garden I recommend the Aesculus parviflora types, which aretypically 2.5m-to-three-metre-tall shrubs with lovely white, candle-like flowers in late July and early August. "The best variety is Aesculus carnea 'Briottii' Award of Garden Merit (AGM). Its distinctive red flowers hang on for quite a while. "I have had no disease to date in my collection, which is four years old, but within a three-mile radius there is a horse chestnut oozing with canker."
