摘要

Conifers have got a bad press in the past - either seen as thugs like Leylandii that cause neighbourly disputes, or as naff seventies throwbacks populating suburban gardens in dwarf form. Of course, it is totally unfair and mostly caused by ignoranceof how majestic, graceful or novel these evergreen trees can be. To redress the balance this article aims to champion conifers. They provide valuable structure and texture to a garden and all-year-round colour. This does not just mean green - many varieties turn attractive shades of orange, blue or purple in the autumn or winter. Even the much maligned Leylandii can be used well, if it is planted on a site where a large screen is needed and acceptable, and it provides a haven for nesting birds.
