With sales of English dessert apples to supermarkets rising by nearly 20 per cent over the past two years or so, one might think the industry has been performing well financially. This belief may have been reinforced by many growers apparently being confident enough to invest heavily in stores, packhouses and orchards, albeit encouraged by grant aid. Yet the situation is not that rosy judging by the reaction of growers to the inadequate returns they are getting from supermarkets and the continuing steep rise in costs across the board. Many admit to struggling financially.
