摘要

Astelia are clump-forming perennials that look similar to stem-less Cordyline or Phormium. Their evergreen leaves have a silver lustre that makes them ideal specimen plants for brightening up shady areas. Indeed, this is the aspect they most prefer, despite looking as though they would appreciate more Mediterranean conditions. There are around 25 species of Astelia, most native to New Zealand, though some hail from Australia, Papua New Guinea and Hawaii. Some of the species are epiphytic and grow attached to trees, but in cultivation they are planted out in gardens or grown in conservatories and on patios.
